Nowadays, however, the internet offers a wealth of listening options if you have the patience to sift through the mountains of material out there.&nbsp;<strong>To help you sift through that mountain, I have compiled a list of my favorite places to go to find video and audio.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp;1.&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/video.newyorker.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The New Yorker<\/a><\/strong><br>Short videos (3 to 20 minutes) on a variety of topics, both&nbsp;<strong>fiction<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>nonfiction<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of my favorite series&nbsp;are&nbsp;<strong>The Comma Queen<\/strong>&nbsp;(grammar and punctuation),&nbsp;<strong>The Screening Room,<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>The New Yorker Presents.&nbsp;<\/strong>. Many of these videos feature dialogues or interviews and the language ranges from formal to informal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2.&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Smithsonian Magazine videos<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Very short videos (some under 2 minutes) to longer 25 minute videos delivered in natural but very clear English on a variety of subjects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Video lengths are clearly marked under each video and videos are organized into the following loose topics:&nbsp;<strong>Smithsonian Channel<\/strong>&nbsp;(lots of different topics),&nbsp;<strong>Innovation<\/strong>&nbsp;(lots of different ideas),<strong>&nbsp;Travel&nbsp;<\/strong>(2 to 25 minute videos about places from all over the world),&nbsp;<strong>Arts and Culture<\/strong>&nbsp;(lots of different topics here from fashion to film),&nbsp;<strong>History&nbsp;<\/strong>(historical footage and reenactments),&nbsp;<strong>Science<\/strong>&nbsp;(Mostly nature and technology related) and&nbsp;<strong>Ask Smithsonian<\/strong>&nbsp;(1 to 2 minute videos answering all kinds of questions)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/video.epicurious.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3. &nbsp;Epicurious<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a food website that I usually visit to find&nbsp;<strong>recipes<\/strong>&nbsp;but they also have&nbsp;<strong>videos<\/strong>. If you click on the video section of the website you can find everything from the&nbsp;<strong>history of mac and cheese<\/strong>&nbsp;to the story behind the&nbsp;<strong>Big Gay Ice Cream store<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are also stories about&nbsp;<strong>food sustainability<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>international foods<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I really liked this site because even though the focus is on&nbsp;<strong>food<\/strong>, they are connected to all kinds of other topics and range from&nbsp;<strong>humorous to practical to serious<\/strong>. I don\u2019t know about you, but I love food and I eat it everyday. It is something we all have in common no matter where we come from or how old we are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.history.com\/speeches\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">4. The History Channel<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have used this to teach students about&nbsp;<strong>American history<\/strong>&nbsp;so they can pass the&nbsp;<strong>TOEFL exam<\/strong>. The TOEFL focused mainly on American culture so having some backgrounds knowledge about&nbsp;<strong>pilgrims, Louis and Clark etc<\/strong>. can help students to answer questions faster and more accurately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This website can be difficult to navigate because the videos that are listed up front are long, TV show episodes that are sometimes only loosely related to history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The better, shorter clips that focus on specific&nbsp;<strong>historical events<\/strong>&nbsp;or periods require a trip to the search bar and I haven\u2019t found a way to browse easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">5. The National Geographic Magazine<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Short videos mostly focusing on&nbsp;<strong>science<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>nature<\/strong>. In addition to narrated videos, there are a variety of&nbsp;<strong>videos without words<\/strong>&nbsp;that could be used with&nbsp;<strong>lower level classes<\/strong>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<strong>practice storytelling, vocabulary or grammar<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Geographic website is very visual with lots of beautiful photographs and written stories. If you scroll down past the written stories you will find the video section and can browse there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">6. The Atlantic Monthly Videos<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>10 to 20 minute videos on a variety of different topics including&nbsp;<strong>controversial<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>international topics<\/strong>&nbsp;but with a focus on different aspects of<strong>&nbsp;American culture<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/\">7. National Public Radio<\/a><\/strong><br>All kinds of stories from&nbsp;<strong>humor<\/strong>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<strong>news<\/strong>. You can find stories about life in America on&nbsp;<strong>\u201cThis American Life\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;or stories about science on&nbsp;<strong>\u201cScience Friday\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They even have great short animated videos in which normal people tell stories about themselves in&nbsp;<strong>\u201cStoryCorps\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">8. Vimeo<\/a><\/strong><br>Vimeo has some great&nbsp;<strong>short films<\/strong>,<strong>&nbsp;music videos<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>documentaries<\/strong>. They are generally very well filmed and edited. It is a bit similar to YouTube but the content is more carefully controlled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a great site to get lost in exploring great video<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sms.cam.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">9. University web sites<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have linked up the lecture section of the University of Cambridge&#8217;s website but many universities have websites that include videos of some of thier<strong>&nbsp;lectures&nbsp;<\/strong>as well as&nbsp;<strong>student videos<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are great for&nbsp;<strong>college study skills courses<\/strong>&nbsp;or any course in which students need to practice note taking in a lecture setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispot.tv\/browse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">10. ispot.tv<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>TV commercials<\/strong>&nbsp;organized into 15 different industry categories and each of those is split into several different subcategories making it&nbsp;<strong>very easy to find exactly what you are looking for<\/strong>&nbsp;from&nbsp;<strong>apparal<\/strong>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<strong>law<\/strong>&nbsp;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These can be great for&nbsp;<strong>beginning learners<\/strong>&nbsp;because the language is generally&nbsp;<strong>brief<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>vocabulary can be easily learned<\/strong>&nbsp;before watching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/radio.garden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">11. Radio.garden<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a fascinating site that allows you to listen to&nbsp;<strong>radio stations from around the world<\/strong>&nbsp;in real time. It also has&nbsp;<strong>personal radio stories<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>station jingles<\/strong>, and&nbsp;<strong>historical stories<\/strong>&nbsp;from around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is particularly cool because it features a globe that you can zoom in\/out and rotate. &nbsp;I have to be careful here or I can lose hours just jumping around the globe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>10 Ideas for How to Use Audio and Video in YOUR Classroom<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Examine parts of the language that are not usually examined like humor.&nbsp;<\/strong>How is humor different in different cultures? I had my Japanese students watch a funny video and then go talk &nbsp;to international students about what they find funny and how humor is shared in their cultures. It was interesting that they said that good friends often insult each other but they are just being funny. You could also examine<ul><li>Sarcasm<\/li><li>body language<\/li><li>rhythm of conversations<\/li><li>tone\/intonation<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>pre-teach vocabulary or phrases and have students listen for who said them.&nbsp;<\/strong>This is good if you have a video clip that is too difficult for your students but you want them to practice targeted listening. They could then work on filling in the gaps and trying to guess what the conversations are about.<\/li><li><strong>Videos with no words can be used as reading or writing prompts<\/strong>. If you make story strips describing the events of the video, students could put those strip in order as they watch the video. If you do this with QRC codes, you could have different groups watching different videos they could then tell each other what the video they watched was about and then guess which group watched which video.<\/li><li><strong>For higher level groups&nbsp;<\/strong>you could find news stories on the same topic from various different countries and compare how they are covered.<\/li><li><strong>Students could create their own&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/storycorps.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">storycorps<\/a>&nbsp;videos<\/strong>&nbsp;either interviewing each other or interviewing a family member. They could do the original interview in their first languages and then turn it into a narration in English.<\/li><li><strong>Students could use the cooking videos to create a dish<\/strong>, bring it to class, have their classmates discuss the results and how cooking in different countries differs.<\/li><li><strong>Watch a comma queen video, then read a magazine article and see if the writer is following the rule she talked about.<\/strong>&nbsp;Write a paragraph following the rule. Make a video explaining one grammar rule in English about how grammar differs in their native languages.<\/li><li><strong>Have students watch videos at home, take notes on them and then bring the notes to class to discuss with their classmates.<\/strong>&nbsp;You can assign a topic so that they are all discussing the same topic from different angles.<\/li><li><strong>Using QRC codes you can create listening jigsaw activities<\/strong>&nbsp;in which students listen to different videos and come together to create something.<\/li><li><strong>Have students choose videos and post them on a class website or learning platform.<\/strong>&nbsp;Students would then be responsible for watching a certain number of them and commenting.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Warning!!!&nbsp;<\/strong><br>Going to these websites can cause you to lose hours if not days of your life. &nbsp;I meant to complete this post in about 1\/3 of the time it actually took be because I kept getting sucked into the vidoes. &nbsp;There is so much good stuff out there! &nbsp;I hope you and your students have as much fun watching videos as I have. &nbsp;What are some of your favorites?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Before the internet, finding good&nbsp;audio content&nbsp;for your class meant either recording it yourself or using your VCR to record a video clip of something on TV.
